dm contemporary was founded in 2003 by Doris Mukabaa Marksohn in Mill Neck, NY, as a contemporary salon dedicated to exhibiting significant new work by emerging and mid-career artists. Housed originally within the Long Island home of its founder and director, the setting offered an alternative environment in which to exhibit and view contemporary art, while allowing for the exchange of ideas and – in keeping with the art salon tradition – providing opportunities to participate in the ongoing discourse in contemporary art.
In October 2010, and after seven years on Long Island, dm contemporary opened its new Manhattan gallery located on 29th Street, in the Flatiron district, establishing an additional exhibition space allowing the gallery to expand its public programs.
dm contemporary represents artists who work in various media. The gallery's program encompasses painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, and installation. It focuses on artists who have attained a level of excellence and innovation in their media, and whose work expands the conventional notions and transcends established traditions – resulting in visual expressions that are both unique and universal.
Additionally, dm contemporary has exhibited at fairs such as Next, Chicago; and Pulse, NY; and has been featured in several publications. Selected gallery press includes: The New York Times, Newsday, The Chicago Tribune, The Baltimore Sun, The Hartford Courant, The Daily Hampshire Gazette, The Missoulian, The Journal Times , The Times Colonist (Canada), and The Sunday Independent (South Africa) among others.
